MTV Fandom Awards / Comic Con Days 3 & 4

San Diego Comic Con...

Once upon a time it was a meeting ground for only the nerdiest of nerds and geekiest of geeks. Comic book collectors, toy aficionados, artists, writers and more would gather to celebrate their love for the genre that connected them all. It was hollowed ground for something held sacred to a select group of enthusiasts.

Now, things have changed. A once cherished gathering has now become mainstream, Pop Culture cannon fodder. The comics and toys and art that put the convention on the map are now playing second fiddle to celebrity panels, signings and movie trailers. The independent beauty that once held this community together is now packed into a tiny corner of the San Diego Convention Center to make way for the large-scale media machine that's taken over.

Comic Con used to be a wonderful thing, but like most things that start small and become popular, it has outgrown its DIY roots. It's terrible...

...

...

Syke! This shit is still tight! I've been wanting to go to Comic Con for years now and I finally had the chance. Sure, it's grown and become more mainstream - but if you look in the right places you'll still find the love for comics and comic culture that started it all. I had a pretty insane weekend and it all started with an e-mail.

(Insert bad segue here...) I'm a Linkin Park fan. I'm part of the Linkin Park fan club, and this e-mail I received was from the fan club in regards to an award show MTV was throwing Thursday night to air the following Sunday. I was being e-mailed to register for a chance to attend the show for free and see Linkin Park headline the event. I entered the contest. A day or two later I received an e-mail saying that I had won. As you can imagine, I was beyond stoked! It's not every day you get to see one of your favorite bands for free, let alone see them in the midst of this chaotic San Diego weekend. The MTV Fandom Awards would serve as the start of my Comic Con experience. Check the pics below.

The lovely Natalie Dormer aka Margaery Tyrell, accompanied on stage by the King Slayer aka Jaime Lannister aka Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. I don't know how he grew his hand back, but whatever the case they were handed the award for "OMG Moment of the Year" for the Purple Wedding scene. Besides seeing LP, this was my favorite part of the night.

Channing Tatum came out to show a preview for his new movie. Six girls and four guys fainted. I maintained composure long enough to take this photo.

After seeing all the awards announced and sitting through some terrible opener we were now one step closer... (That joke wrote itself. I've been waiting to write this post just to use it!)

Hit Girl introduced Linkin Park and then I blacked out. Luckily, Kt was there to get pictures.

In terms of quality, Kt took the best picture of the night. What's up Mr. S?!

It was a short, but killer set! I'll be seeing these guys in September, so this was a cool prelude to that show.

After the Awards Show/Concert, KT and I were able to attend an early screening of the film Mall, directed by Linkin Park's own Joe Hahn. We watched the film and then took part in a Q&A panel. Joe was a super rad guy, and his movie was crazy!

It would turn out that seeing one of my favorite bands and meeting one of the band members would only be the start of a crazy weekend for me.

Comic Con was a pretty great time. I'm not the biggest comic book guy, but I appreciate certain characters, books, stories, movies, etc. I knew this would be a big year for the TMNT since the movie was coming out, but unfortunately I didn't make it to the TMNT panel. I didn't get into the convention 'til about 3:30pm on Saturday. Once I was in though, it was on like Voltron (thought I was going DK, huh?).

Check the pics below. This isn't everything, but these are the pictures I thought looked best. I did more stuff that I don't have the pictures to, but you'll have to enjoy these for now.

The homie Ice King. He wasn't grounded.

Weta Workshop had a killer booth with all kinds of LOTR and Hobbit stuff. The big homie Smaug was posted. *Spoiler Alert* Bilbo and the dwarves successfully take the mountain back from this buster at the end of the Hobbit.

Myself, Bay and my bae. The dude in red is Baymax, the hero from Big Hero 6, which looks awesome. Kt was apparently mega stoked.

Mondo started with posters, moved into records, and now they're taking on toys. Of course, one of their first toys will be a Michelangelo based off Mike Mitchell artwork. I can't wait to go broke trying to get my hands on one of these!

I ran into a beautiful Daenerys Targaryen cosplayer outside the con. Her and her friend were killing it! I kindly asked if she would hold a flyer reppin' 8th & G and she said she would as long as I tagged her cosplay group Carma Cosplay. Check them out on IG : @carmacosplay. P.S. That baby dragon was handmade.

Kt and I got to take a picture with four of my favorite dudes ever. If this was the 90s, I'd be standing next to guys in costumes with animatronic faces. Alas, it's 2014 and I'm standing next to no one but Kt (which isn't a bad thing). The photo guy didn't do a very good job of cropping us in though. Kt looks ready for action. I look like I'm giving Michelangelo a shell rub. Weird.

Well, that's all the decent photos I have for now. Again, this is a small summary of how my weekend went. There's a lot of people to shout out here, but I would like to thank a select few for helping me out this weekend... Big thanks to JC and Tasha Lopez for letting Kt and I jump in line with them for the GoT Experience. They waited for 4 hours. Kt and I waited for 20 minutes. Next, I'd like to give a HUGE shout out to Kris "WTFunks" Butiong for helping me get my hands on a limited TMNT vinyl figure. I really appreciate the help with that and more. Thanks to Arthur for cruising with us for a few hours one of the days. Lastly, thanks to Jay and Darcie Huggins for giving me a job that allows me to get paid and do cool shit with my friends and family. I couldn't ask for much more, although occasionally I do. Thanks again to everyone who helped me out. Y'all made this an awesome weekend! See you guys there next year!
